Biography:
Curve Cuts: Third professional season. Played his college ball at Clemson University, where he posted a 3.25 ERA in 81 appearances (10 starts). Played for the 2006 USA National Team that won a gold medal at the World Championships in Cuba. Is the highest drafted left-handed pitcher in Pirates history (selected 4th overall) and second Clemson player to be drafted by the Pirates in the first round, joining Kris Benson who was a first round pick in 1996
2008 Season: Won his first two decisions of the season, including a win @ Salem on 4/18 (6.0IP 1R 1ER 3H 0W 4K). Suffered his first professional loss on 4/28 vs. Myrtle Beach (5.0IP 6R 5ER 6H 2W 2K). Pitched 6.2 shutout innings in win vs. Frederick on 5/8 (0R 6H 0W 3K). Pitched his best game of the year vs. Kinston on 6/14 (W, 7.2IP 0R 3H 1W 7K). Went 0-3 with a 11.90 ERA in five July starts before being sent to the bullpen on 7/31. Had a 3.68 ERA in eight relief appearances from 7/31 to the end of the season. 2007 Season: Made his professional debut with the GCL Pirates on 7/29 vs. GCL Orioles (ND 1.0IP 0R 1H 0W 0K). Struck-out three batters over 2.0 innings on 8/3 vs. GCL Orioles. Promoted to Short-A State College on 8/5. Allowed a run in 1.0 inning of relief in Spikes debut on 8/6 vs. Mahoning Valley. Was scored upon in three of his first four appearances with State College. Didn’t allow a run in his final four outings with State College. Earned his first career save on 9/6 vs. Mahoning Valley (Zach Duke started the game on a rehab assignment)
