Baseball America rates his fastball the best in the Pirates farm system in the 2009 Prospect Handbook. Was rated the 10th best prospect in the state of Tennessee by Baseball America prior to the 2005 draft
2008 Season: Began the campaign with the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League. Averaged 11.51 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. Was scored on in just four of his 13 outings with Lynchburg. Held Carolina League hitters to a.153 average. Promoted to Altoona on May 20. Struck out 55 batters in 43.0 innings of work with Altoona. Limited Eastern League hitters to a.219 average. Left game at Harrisburg on August 8 with a sore right shoulder and missed the rest of the season
2007 Season: Appeared in eight games (all starts) with Low-A Hickory of the South Atlantic League. Averaged a little under 4.0 innings per start. Went 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA in four starts from June 13-30. Held SAL hitters to a.208 average on the road
