Biography:
Curve Cuts: 3rd professional season. Defected from Cuba in July 2005. Spent two years with the Cuban Youth National team (1999-2000) and four years playing for the Cuban National team (2001-2004). Posted a combined record of 18-7 with a 3.27 ERA during his six year stint in Cuba
2008 Season: Started the season with Altoona. Picked up his first win of the year @ Erie on 4/17 (5IP 1R 1ER 4H 0W 5K). Allowed only one run over six innings and slapped an RBI single in a win @ Reading on 5/10. Went 3-2 with a 1.45 ERA (31IP 8R 5ER 30H 10W 18K) during a six game stretch from 4/17-5/15. Got a no decision despite pitching eight shutout innings vs. Connecticut on 6/6 (8IP 0R 4H 0W 6K). Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 2-8 for his performance vs. Connecticut on 6/6. Tossed seven shutout innings vs. Bowie on 6/22 (. 7IP 0R 2H 1W 3K). Promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis for a spot start on 6/27 @ Columbus (. 7IP 2R 2ER 7H 1W 6K). Sent back to Altoona on 6/29 and got the win in his next start on 7/2 vs. Binghamton (7IP 1R 0ER 4H 2W 4K). Promoted to Pittsburgh on 7/12 and made his major league debut that night vs. St. Louis (ND 4 1/3IP 6R 6ER 11H 4W 4K). Earned his first major league win on 7/24 vs. San Diego (6IP 0R 6H 1W 4K). Optioned back to Altoona on 8/7 after five starts with Pittsburgh. Went 1-1 with a 4.98 ERA in four season ending starts with Altoona
2007 Season: Spent the entire season with Altoona. Rated by Baseball America as the Pirates #4 prospect entering the season. Lost his first four and last four decisions of the year, but earned wins in six of seven decisions from 6/12-7/16. Made his American debut with the Curve on 4/11 @ Akron (ND 5IP 1R 1ER 4H 1W 2K). Made ten starts before getting his first American win vs. New Britain on 6/12 (6IP 0R 7H 0W 2K). Was credited with his first complete game in a 2-1 loss vs. Erie in game one of a doubleheader on 8/18 (7IP 2R 2ER 5H 0W 2K). Yielded a.296 average against EL hitters including a.315 average vs. left-handed hitters
