CURVE, Pa. – Missed opportunities cost the Altoona Curve on Saturday night at BCB as the club stranded a season-high 15 runners on the bases in its, 5-3, loss to the Bowie Baysox. The previous season high was 14.
After a scoreless first inning, the Baysox were able to send 10 men to the plate in the top of the second inning and eventually chase starter
Tim Alderson (6-4) from the game. Back-to-back doubles by Robbie Widlansky and Caleb Joseph plated the Baysox first run of the inning. After a strikeout of Brandon Waring, Greg Miclat and Carlos Rojas each connected for RBI singles to run the score to, 3-0.
Alderson lasted just two more batters before being taken out in favor of reliever
Dustin Molleken, who allowed a two-out single to Tyler Henson to bring in Bowie’s fourth run. After 1.5 innings, the Baysox led, 4-0.
The Curve answered in the bottom of the third inning, plating two runs on two hits.
Chase d’Arnaud led off with a double and
Gorkys Hernandez walked to put two on with no outs. A throwing error by the catcher Joseph on a pickoff attempt of d’Arnaud at second skipped into center field allowing both runners to move up 90 feet.
Josh Harrison hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home d’Arnaud and
Matt Hague singled in Hernandez to bring Altoona within two.
That’s where the game would stay as Molleken went on to pitch 4.1 innings of scoreless relief before giving the ball to
Tony Watson in the seventh. Altoona threatened in the fourth and fifth innings but failed to get the key hit with two away to bring around the runners.
Bowie added a run in the eighth to make it, 5-2 before Altoona once again threatened in the eighth. The first two men reached in the eighth but Hernandez struck out and Harrison flew out before a wild pitch during Hague’s at bat scored
Anthony Norman from third.
Of the 15 men stranded on the bases by the Curve, nine were left in scoring position. Hague, Harrison, d’Arnaud, Norman and Ford all had two hits for Altoona in the loss. As a team, Altoona was 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position in the game.
Having lost two in a row, Altoona (48-26) will try and salvage the final game of the homestand on Sunday against the Baysox (39-35) at 6 p.m. The Curve sends LHP
Rudy Owens (6-3, 2.80) to the slab in the finale while Bowie sends LHP Nate Nery (0-1, 9.00) to the bump.
Sunday Night Fireworks will be shot off at the conclusion of the game on Sunday night. It’s also Somerset County Community Night and a Galliker’s Kids Club Sunday at BCB. Kids can run the bases at the conclusion of the game and fans can partake in a catch on the field before the game.
